This might seem obvious for some but I've been wondering when the timer should really be started.
I've seen some people start it immediately when they hit reset, some who wait for a while after hitting reset, some who start the timer at power on and some who start it at the "first flash".
So is there an "official" way?

Time starts when either, the blue default screen turns black when you switch the console on or when the screen flashes. So it's a little after you switch on the console.

So, don't reset. Turn the power on.
It's a really fucking shitty system idk why we do it. I'm fine with doing it at power on, but there's no much purpose in waiting a bit imo.
Life is what happens while you're busy playing mario.

Well that little moment the game hasn't officially started, I guess, so the actual timing would be false if included.

I was told that your timing is correct if the big "Mario" text appears at exactly 1.4 seconds so you can use that as a reference.

What about playing SM64 on VC? When do we start it? I usually start my timer when I press home menu and right when I click hit "Restart"

For VC start the timer 3 minutes before you press reset, I think that's about right anyway.
